Food Safety Awareness in the UAE

Food safety is a critical aspect of ensuring public health and well-being. In the United Arab Emirates where a significant portion of food is imported, maintaining high standards of food safety is paramount.

This is why the UAE has implemented robust legal provisions to safeguard food safety. In January 2016, Federal Law No. 10 of 2015 on Food Safety was approved by the late H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This law establishes standards and regulations to maintain the safety and quality of food, with a focus on protecting public health and consumers.Key aspects of the food law include import approval; prohibited products; label accuracy; and national food accreditation and registration system.

Under this system, all food—whether imported, locally produced, or modified—must be registered in the electronic platform known as ZAD. This integrated smart system ensures that food products’ data is tracked and managed before they enter the UAE markets.

The UAE also established  a Rapid Alert System for Food that plays a crucial role in managing food risks. When serious food safety risks are detected, this system facilitates swift response measures. It identifies mechanisms for handling food risk alerts, bans on adulterated or misbranded food, and timely lifting of such bans.

Despite all these measures, awareness among the public remai essential. The UAE government collaborates with various entities to educate citizens and residents about safe food practices. Initiatives include regular health campaigns that  emphasize proper food handling, storage, and hygiene; training programs for food handlers and restaurant staff to enhance their knowledge of food safety protocols; and consumer education through informative materials and workshops in order to empower consumers to make informed choices.

In the UAE, food safety is not just a legal requirement; it’s a commitment to the health and well-being of its people. By enforcing strict regulations, implementing advanced systems, and promoting awareness, the UAE continues to prioritize food safety—a cornerstone of its thriving society.
