Autism spectrum disorder refers to a group of diverse impairments associated with brain development that result in difficulties in social interaction and communication. Although the World Health Organization reports that one in 100 children suffers from this disease, current research suggest that the actual number may be higher, up to 2.5%. Autism has other features such as unusual patterns of activities and behaviors, difficulty of moving from one activity to another, being absorbed in details, and problems interacting emotionally. People with autism have a range of abilities and needs. While some people might be able to live independently, others would require care and assistance their entire lives.
These disorders are known to significantly impact learning opportunities as well as work and social integration. In addition, families of children with autism require help and assistance that may not be available unless the community is educated about the nature of this disorder. As a consequence, the Emirate of Dubai decided to support this cause, by establishing the Dubai Autism Center. It is a non-profit organization that aims to provide both specialized care services for children with autism and support for their families and caregivers. The center will be funded through subsidies and donations.
With 150 students enrolled in its school and clinic programs, this multidisciplinary center is a leader in its field. It offers specialized services in 34 classrooms, 22 movement therapy clinics, 18 speech therapy clinics, 3 sensory treatment rooms, several laboratories, and medical clinics.
As part of its annual awareness campaign, the Center launched the “Autism Murals” initiative. Government officials parents of students, and a number of members of the Board of Directors of the center, all participated in the launch of this project. The initiative aims to transform the walls of buildings into artistic paintings that carry awareness messages about autism and showcase the talents of children.
Yes, Dubai is committed to raise awareness about the disorder and to show the creativity of autistic children and their need for love and acceptance.
