Hydrogen: The Fuel Of The Future

As climate change becomes an increasingly pressing issue, governments across the globe are taking significant steps to fund, legislate, and raise awareness about green economies. As efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases intensify, hydrogen fuel is emerging as a promising alternative. According to studies, green hydrogen could provide up to 25% of the world’s energy needs by 2050.

It is worth mentioning that the “colors” of hydrogen indicate its production method. “Grey” hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels, especially natural gas or coal, by a process that releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. “Blue” hydrogen is produced from the same sources but with reduced carbon emissions through carbon capture technology, making it less harmful to the environment. “Turquoise” hydrogen is produced by thermally electrolyzing methane, which generates carbon in its solid form so that it does not pollute the air or contribute to global warming. “Green” hydrogen is produced by electrolyzing water using electricity derived from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar energy.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) seeks to occupy an advanced position in the hydrogen sector and aims to achieve hydrogen production of 1.4 million tons annually by 2031, which is scheduled to rise to 15 million tons annually by 2050. The country plans to develop at least two hydrogen production parks by 2031 and will start with blue hydrogen, which has proven economic feasibility, before advancing to green hydrogen. The UAE may also produce what is known as “pink” hydrogen, meaning that it mainly benefits from nuclear reactors.

The UAE is intensifying its research and legislative efforts to pave the way for the “hydrogen revolution”, for a green and sustainable future.
